When most people think of Southern California they imagine an always sunny beach. However, it’s not all endless summer here on the Pacific coast. The water can be quite cold most of the year and sunshine gets a late start compared to many other places. Coastal “May Gray” gives way to “June Gloom” in what seems to locals like a never-ending haze. But just when we can’t take another bleak afternoon, the clouds magically part, the fog lifts, and from July ‘till the end of September it’s fun in the sun every day.  There’s no place I’d rather spend these California dream days than The Surfrider Malibu.

The Surfrider is a small beach house style inn run by a mostly Malibu born and based team. The vibes are positive, the times are happy, and the waves are considered some of the best in the world. Your new Malibu home away from home features:

  • Guest-Only Restaurant
  • Grown Alchemist Organic Skincare Products
  • Bellino Linens
  • Beach Amenities: stand-up paddle boards, umbrellas, beach baskets, towels & sunscreen
  • Custom Surfboards by McTavish
  • Wetsuits for Rent
  • Surfboard Storage
  • Heated Outdoor Shower
  • Complimentary Wifi throughout
  • Lobby Boutique with locally curated essentials
  • Surf Lessons + picnics, beach yoga, in-room massage, horse riding (available on request)
  • Electric Car Charging Stations
  • Fully Accessible parking, room and amenity spaces

The guest-only Roof Deck Bar and Restaurant, a proud member of the Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Restaurant Program, has amazing views of Malibu Pier and the vast Pacific Ocean. Their food and drink menus are Coastal-Californian fresh with a focus on locally sourced, sustainable organic produce. The Surfrider’s daily “Malibu Hour” from 4 PM to 5 PM features seasonal complimentary specialty cocktails … and they know how to make a mean mocktail in a pretty glass.

Though laid back and chill The Surfrider is stoked to receive some gnarly accolades including the Travel & Leisure “World’s Best Award” and made the Conde Nast Gold List of “Best Hotels in the World”. Each California cozy-chic room comes complete with Bellino linens, spa rain shower, Grown Alchemist amenities and Parachute robes.

Surf lessons for all levels are available at The Surfrider. This visit I left the rad waves to the local legends and did not brave the breaks beyond softie board body surfing. Between morning walks along Malibu Pier, shopping at the nearby Malibu Lumberyard, hiking in the canyon, and eating delicious dinners while watching the sunset from the Roof Deck, my lazy, do-nothing beach days became rather eventful. I also enjoyed grooving around my cute little room to the Surfrider Sounds playlists on Spotify.

Whether it’s is a quick cruise down PCH or a longed-for destination vacation, The Surfrider Malibu feels like a world away.  In just a few days I’m off the hook refreshed from being lulled by the sun, sand and surf. Plus, I’ve got a base tan and a new soundtrack for summer. Pretty sweet L.A. staycation if you ask me.
