Most everything I know about Santa Barbara I learned from the soap opera of the same name. Santa Barbara began running on NBC in my early teen years and I ran home every day after school so I wouldn’t miss a minute of it. I was intoxicated by the Capwell family’s glamourous lifestyle led by romantic couples “Eden and Cruz” and “Mason and Julia.” Only in my wildest pubescent fantasies did I dare to imagine working with such legendary actors as A. Martinez (“Cruz Castillo”) and Lane Davies (“Mason Capwell”). That dream became reality when I was cast as “Jo Connors” on the daytime drama series The Bay. I was nominated for an Emmy for my role and won a couple as a producer. However, it has been getting to know the people, especially those that were a part of my Santa Barbara coming of age era, that has been the greatest reward of all.
Over the years I have visited the real city of Santa Barbara a handful of times for its vibrant cultural scene, quiet luxury shopping, and breathtaking beaches. It’s a sleepier town than the sudsy TV version but perfect for a weekend away from hectic Los Angeles. Driving up the Pacific coast, I am eager to arrive at the historic El Encanto, A Belmond Hotel, Santa Barbara for the first time.
Originally built in 1918, El Encanto stands as the epitome of timeless elegance, blending classic charm with modern amenities for an enchanting experience atop California’s famous coastline. The resort, nestled into the hills of a quiet neighborhood, is understated and intimate. Upon entering the small circular driveway, I am met by a valet and ushered into the foyer of a sunlit lobby for an easy breezy check in. After a welcome house blend iced tea and brief tour of the main house (restaurant, bar, and spa) I am escorted, down one of the many brick walkways that connect the property, to my gorgeous suite. El Encanto’s Spanish Colonial Revival architecture is characterized by red-tiled roofs, white stucco walls, and wrought-iron accents. The hotel offers an array of accommodations from cozy rooms to spacious bungalows each thoughtfully designed for superb comfort and style. Most have private terraces or balconies to enjoy stunning views of the Pacific Ocean or lush gardens.
Tasteful décor and plush bedding, including an assortment of pillows of different size and firmness to choose from, create an atmosphere perfect for relaxation. Lovely touches like a stationary set to write notes and postcards, complimentary welcome local wine, tea, and sweet treats, and bath products using indigenous natural ingredients invite you to unwind and linger in life’s simple pleasures…like a swim in a big marble bathtub with a view.
El Encanto is committed to sustainability and has implemented numerous eco-friendly practices like energy-efficient lighting and water conservation initiatives. The grounds are maintained using sustainable gardening practices and the hotel supports the local artisans and farming community. With all the emphasis on saving water I’m happy to report the rain shower in my room was still super strength.
In the weeks prior to my El Encanto, A Belmond Hotel, Santa Barbara visit I had the pleasure of attending the Santa Barbara 40thAnniversary Reunion. I was happy to hug my friends Lane Davies and his partner Chrystal Ayers, who put on the event in support of Conasauga Shakespeare Coalition theatre company. I was enthralled by the heart felt behind-the-scenes stories from the cast and crew and deeply moved by the tribute to the show’s creator, the late great Bridget Dobson, by Lane and her devoted husband and co-creator Jerome “Jerry” Dobson. Plus, I was thrilled to nab a coveted photo with soap super-couple “Mason and Julia” (Lane and Nancy Lee Grahn).
Just like Santa Barbara lured me into their intrigue day after day, El Encanto has cast a spell over me to want to return again and again. If you would like to experience the serenity of the Santa Barbara coast in a unique California chic hideaway, El Encanto, invites you to book your stay today. https://www.belmond.com/hotels/north-america/usa/ca/santa-barbara/belmond-el-encanto/
